Neck Pain: More Than Just a Stiff Neck

Does your neck feel tight, stiff, or painful by the end of the day? Maybe you wake up with a headache that starts at the base of your skull, struggle to turn your head while driving, or constantly massage the muscles around your shoulders and neck.

If so, you’re not alone.

Many people who visit us have already tried stretching, massage, new pillows, exercises, or simply waiting for the pain to go away. Some have even been told that everything looks normal, yet they still live with daily discomfort. If you’ve ever felt frustrated, dismissed, or like nobody has truly listened to your story, we understand.

Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints we see at our clinic in Amsterdam-Oost. While many people assume it’s simply caused by “sleeping funny” or spending too much time at a desk, the reality is often more complex.

The good news? Understanding the cause is often the first step towards lasting improvement.

What Does Neck Pain Feel Like?

Neck pain can present in many different ways. Some people experience a dull ache, while others describe a sharp, stabbing pain that catches them during certain movements.

Common symptoms include:

  • Stiffness when turning or tilting the head
  • Sharp or stabbing pain in the neck
  • Tightness across the shoulders and upper back
  • Pain between the shoulder blades
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Pain that worsens after desk work or driving
  • Headaches originating from the neck
  • Jaw pain, facial tension, or clenching sensations

Neck Pain and Headaches

Many headaches actually originate from the neck.

A common example is a suboccipital headache, which starts in the muscles and joints at the base of the skull. These headaches often begin in the upper neck before travelling into the back of the head, around the temples, or even behind the eyes.

People often describe:

  • A headache that starts at the base of the skull
  • One-sided head pain
  • Tenderness at the top of the neck
  • Headaches triggered by prolonged sitting or stress
  • Symptoms that worsen with neck movement

Can Neck Problems Cause Jaw Pain?

Absolutely.

The upper neck and jaw are closely connected through shared muscles and nerve pathways. Because of this, dysfunction in the neck can sometimes contribute to:

  • Jaw pain or tightness
  • Facial tension
  • Pain around the ear
  • Clenching or grinding sensations
  • Temple headaches

Many people focus solely on their jaw, unaware that the neck may be playing an important role in their symptoms.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Neck pain rarely has a single cause. More often, it develops gradually as the result of several contributing factors.

Common causes include:

  • Long hours at a desk or computer
  • Looking down at phones and tablets
  • Stress and muscle tension
  • Previous injuries such as car accidents or sports injuries
  • Repetitive movements
  • Poor sleep posture
  • Reduced mobility in the joints of the neck and upper back

Neck Pain Treatment in Amsterdam-Oost

At The Third Space, we begin with a detailed chiropractic consultation and physical examination to understand exactly what is contributing to your symptoms.

We assess not only the neck itself, but also the upper back, shoulders, posture, movement patterns, nervous system, and when appropriate, the jaw. Our goal is to identify the areas that may be driving your pain rather than simply chasing symptoms.

For some people, restoring movement and function to the right area can be genuinely life-changing.

While meaningful improvement often takes time, we also regularly see people experience immediate changes following their first adjustment. Some notice considerable improvement in movement, less pain when turning their head, and fewer or no headaches.

Of course, every person responds differently, which is why we focus on understanding your individual situation rather than applying the same approach to everyone.
