Foot and Ankle Pain: Every Step Starts Here

Your feet are the foundation of every movement you make.

Whether you’re walking, running, lifting weights, or simply standing at work, your feet and ankles absorb thousands of steps every day. When they stop moving efficiently, pain can develop not only in the foot itself, but also further up the body, affecting the knees, hips and lower back.

At The Third Space, we look at how your foot functions as part of the entire movement chain.

Common Foot and Ankle Complaints

Foot and ankle pain can develop for many different reasons. Some of the most common conditions we see include:

  • Ankle sprains
  • Stiff ankles following previous injuries
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendon pain
  • Pain across the top of the foot
  • Pain around the arch or heel
  • Big toe stiffness
  • General ankle pain during walking or running

Sometimes symptoms begin after an injury, while others develop gradually over months as the foot becomes overloaded.

Why Does Foot Pain Develop?

The foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints and over 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments, all working together to absorb impact and propel you forwards.

If one or more of these joints become stiff, the rest of the foot often has to compensate. This can change the way forces travel through the ankle and foot, placing greater strain on muscles, tendons and ligaments.

For runners, people who stand all day or anyone returning to exercise, these small changes can gradually lead to pain.

It Isn’t Always Just the Foot

Your ankle, knee, hip and lower back all influence how you walk.

Reduced ankle movement following a previous sprain, for example, can alter the way you squat, climb stairs or run. Over time, these changes may increase the load on other joints higher up the body.

Rather than treating the painful area in isolation, we assess how your entire lower limb moves together.

How Can Chiropractic Help?

At The Third Space, we assess the joints of the foot and ankle alongside the knee, hip and pelvis to understand why your symptoms have developed.

Gentle chiropractic adjustments aim to restore normal movement where appropriate, particularly after previous ankle sprains or periods of stiffness. Improving joint mobility can help reduce unnecessary muscle guarding, improve how forces are distributed through the foot and allow you to move more comfortably.

Combined with advice on exercise and activity, our goal is to help you return to walking, running and sport with greater confidence.
