Back Pain: When Every Movement Reminds You It’s There

Few things affect daily life quite like back pain.

For some people, it’s a constant dull ache that never fully disappears. For others, it’s a sharp pain when bending over, getting out of the car, picking up their child, or simply putting on their shoes.

Many of the people we see have already tried stretching, massages, exercises, painkillers, or simply waiting for it to settle down. Some have even had scans that showed “wear and tear” or nothing significant at all, yet they continue to struggle with pain every day.

If you’ve ever felt frustrated because nobody has been able to explain why your back keeps hurting, you’re not alone.

The good news? Back pain is often more complex than a single muscle, disc, or joint, and understanding what is contributing to your symptoms is often the first step towards improvement.

What Does Back Pain Feel Like?

Low back pain can present in many different ways.

Some people experience a dull ache across the lower back, while others describe a sharp, stabbing pain that appears during certain movements. For some, the pain comes and goes. For others, it becomes a daily frustration.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain across the lower back
  • Sharp pain when bending, lifting, or twisting
  • Stiffness after sitting for prolonged periods
  • Difficulty standing upright after getting out of bed
  • Pain when getting out of a chair or car
  • Muscle tightness or spasms
  • Pain that travels into the buttock or hip
  • A feeling that the back is “locked” or “stuck”
  • Recurring episodes that keep returning

What Is Sacroiliac Joint Pain?

One of the most commonly overlooked sources of low back pain is the sacroiliac joint, often referred to as the SI joint.

The sacroiliac joints sit between your pelvis and the base of your spine. Their job is to transfer forces between the upper and lower body every time you walk, run, lift, or change direction.

When these joints become irritated or don’t move as well as they should, pain is often felt on one side of the lower back, around the belt line, buttock, or upper hip.

People with sacroiliac joint pain often describe:

  • Pain on one side of the lower back
  • Pain around the dimples at the back of the pelvis
  • Pain when standing on one leg
  • Discomfort turning in bed
  • Pain when getting out of a car
  • Pain that can spread into the buttock or upper thigh

Many people assume this pain is coming from a disc, when in reality the sacroiliac joint may be contributing to their symptoms.

Why Does Back Pain Keep Coming Back?

One of the most frustrating things about back pain is how often it returns.

This is because back pain rarely has a single cause.

Previous injuries, prolonged sitting, repetitive movements, stress, poor sleep, reduced movement, sporting activities, and even changes in routine can all influence how the lower back functions.

Often the body adapts for months or years before symptoms finally appear. This is why the event that triggered your pain is not always the true cause of the problem.

Two people may have identical symptoms but completely different reasons for experiencing them.

How Can Chiropractic Help?

At The Third Space, we don’t simply focus on where the pain is located. We focus on understanding why it may have developed in the first place.

Your chiropractic consultation includes a detailed history and physical examination. We assess the lower back, pelvis, sacroiliac joints, hips, movement patterns, posture, and nervous system to build a complete picture of what may be contributing to your symptoms.

For some people, restoring movement to a restricted joint can be genuinely life-changing. While long-term improvement often requires addressing several contributing factors, some people experience immediate changes following their first adjustment, noticing reduced pain, easier movement, or a feeling that their body is functioning more naturally again.

Every person is different, which is why we tailor our approach to your individual situation rather than applying the same treatment to everyone.
