Wrist Pain: It’s Not Always Just Your Wrist

Wrist pain can make even the simplest everyday tasks frustrating. Opening a jar, typing on a keyboard, lifting weights or supporting yourself when getting out of a chair can suddenly become uncomfortable.

Many people assume wrist pain is caused by a single injury, but in reality there are many different structures that can contribute to symptoms. Understanding exactly where the pain is coming from is often the first step towards finding the right treatment.

What Does Wrist Pain Feel Like?

Wrist pain can present in many different ways depending on the structures involved.

Some people experience pain on the thumb side of the wrist, while others notice discomfort around the little finger, across the back of the wrist or deep within the joint itself.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain when lifting or gripping
  • Pain during push-ups or weight-bearing
  • Stiffness in the wrist
  • Clicking or catching sensations
  • Reduced grip strength
  • Tingling or numbness in the hand or fingers
  • Pain that is worse after repetitive activities

Although these symptoms may seem similar, they can have very different underlying causes.

Why Does Wrist Pain Develop?

The wrist is one of the most complex joints in the body.

It is made up of eight small carpal bones, multiple joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves that all need to move together smoothly every time you use your hand. Whether you’re typing, lifting, exercising or using tools, these small joints are constantly absorbing and transferring force.

After repetitive use, previous injuries or simply with age-related osteoarthritis, some of these joints may lose mobility. When one part of the wrist isn’t moving as efficiently, neighbouring joints often have to compensate by moving more, which may contribute to irritation, stiffness and pain over time.

This is one reason why restoring normal movement throughout the wrist can be an important part of recovery.

What About Tingling or Numbness?

Not all wrist symptoms actually originate in the wrist.

Tingling, numbness, or altered sensation in the hand can certainly result from irritation of nerves as they pass through the wrist, such as in carpal tunnel syndrome. However, nerves travel all the way from the neck, through the shoulder and elbow before reaching the hand.

This means irritation higher up the arm can sometimes produce symptoms that are felt in the wrist or fingers.

For example, reduced movement around the elbow or irritation of nerves as they leave the neck may contribute to pain, tingling or numbness in the hand. In some people, more than one area is involved, which is why simply treating the wrist doesn’t always resolve the problem.

Looking at the entire pathway of the nerve often provides a much clearer understanding of where symptoms are coming from.

How Chiropractic Care May Help

When appropriate, gentle and precise chiropractic adjustments aim to restore movement to joints that have become stiff or restricted. As these joints begin moving more normally again, they provide clearer information to the nervous system, often helping to reduce unnecessary muscle tension, improve joint function and decrease irritation of nearby nerves.

Rather than simply focusing on where the pain is felt, our goal is to identify and address the underlying factors contributing to your symptoms, helping you move more comfortably and use your hand with greater confidence.
